Nestled deep within a mountain village, the valley's challenging access doesn't deter many visitors from coming to camp and check-in, drawn by its lush, fresh scenery and a famous local delicacy – 'tree-sleeping' wild chicken.
About 10km from Cat Ba town center, Lien Minh Valley, located in Lien Minh village, Tran Chau commune, on Cat Ba Island, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong City, has become a popular destination for travelers seeking new experiences and discoveries in recent years. It's cherished for its fresh, green landscapes and its preserved rustic, wild beauty.
Lien Minh Valley (also known as Butterfly Valley) is nestled deep within a mountain village, believed to be the highest point on Cat Ba Island. Previously, the road to the valley was quite challenging, but it has now been paved, making it much easier for visitors to access this interesting destination.

Unlike other tourist spots on Cat Ba Island, Butterfly Valley is hidden behind a high mountain range, at the very end of the road leading to Lien Minh village.
Duong Giang, a visitor from Hai Phong, noted that both cars and motorbikes can reach the valley, but advised driving at a moderate speed due to some very steep sections of the road.
“This route also winds through the forest, so on a sunny day, the natural scenery is absolutely beautiful. Additionally, along both sides of the road are the charming, old houses of Lien Minh villagers, exuding the authentic character of the Northern Vietnamese countryside,” the young man shared.
At the heart of Lien Minh Valley lies a vast, sprawling meadow surrounded by pristine nature, part of the core conservation area. The cool, fresh air here attracts many travelers looking to camp and 'change their scenery'.

Each season, Lien Minh Valley reveals its unique beauty, enticing visitors to experience and explore. In spring, countless flowers bloom in vibrant colors, and the grass grows lush and green. In early summer, sim flowers blossom, painting the entire area in striking purple hues. And in winter, the valley is covered in a sea of reeds.
Visitors can camp here for the day or overnight. If staying overnight, guests need to contact and obtain permission from the local authorities, and also prepare all necessary items such as sleeping bags, insulated mats, tents, flashlights, and charcoal or firewood for warmth, among others.
“The weather on the island can be sunny one moment and suddenly rainy the next, so anyone going on a day trip like us should bring a rain tarp to ensure a smooth journey,” Giang added.

Many families, groups, and young people choose Lien Minh Valley as their preferred spot for camping and picnics on weekends.
Mr. Quang, a camping enthusiast from Hai Phong, visited Lien Minh Valley with friends on the 4th day of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Wood Dragon). His group enjoyed a day trip there, finding the journey convenient, taking only a few hours to travel from the city center to Cat Ba Island.
“Everyone can follow Google Maps directions to Lien Minh Valley. Motorbikes and cars can reach the campsite directly, and there's no entrance fee. The drive on Cat Ba Island is also very scenic, with cliffs on one side and the sea on the other,” Mr. Quang shared.
This visitor was impressed by Lien Minh Valley's natural, pristine beauty and its lack of extensive tourism or commercial development. For this reason, tourists visiting are reminded not to litter, helping to preserve the surrounding landscape.

Around Lien Minh Valley, there are also several beautifully designed homestays that serve local specialties, offering visitors an option for a stopover and overnight stay.
Besides camping, this area is also an ideal spot that attracts many domestic and international tourists for adventurous rock climbing, thanks to its distinctive high mountain terrain. Visitors should remember to prepare all necessary safety equipment when participating in this activity.
Half of Lien Minh Valley is surrounded by the characteristic limestone mountain forest terrain of Cat Ba Island, making this area home to many unique species of trees and flowers.

The ideal time to visit Lien Minh Valley is from March to the end of June. During this period, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold.

Many children accompany their families to enjoy picnics and play in the lush, peaceful valley.
If you visit in March, you might witness the season when sim flowers bloom, painting the entire area purple. In December, the valley is filled with reeds. Notably, in early summer (around late March, early April), visitors to Lien Minh will be overwhelmed by the sight of butterflies fluttering everywhere. This is why the area is also known as 'Butterfly Valley'.
Due to Lien Minh Valley's low-lying terrain, it can become flooded during the rainy season (approximately from May to July). Visitors should check the weather forecast before their trip to ensure the best possible experience.

Lien Minh Valley doesn't yet have many tourist services, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks for the most complete and comfortable trip.
Beyond its pristine, lush natural scenery, Lien Minh Valley also entices visitors with its delicious 'homegrown' dishes, deeply rooted in the region's identity. Among these, the 'tree-sleeping' wild chicken from Lien Minh village is a must-try.
The chickens here are free-range, often foraging in the forest, climbing mountains, and sleeping in trees daily, resulting in firm, sweet meat. Locals typically prepare 'tree-sleeping chicken' in simple ways, such as boiling or wrapping and grilling it in wild banana leaves, to preserve its natural delicious flavor.
If you have the chance to visit Cat Ba Island, in addition to exploring Lien Minh Valley, you can combine it with discovering other interesting destinations like Cai Be fishing village, Viet Hai ancient village, and enjoy activities such as swimming, rock climbing, night squid fishing, as well as savoring delicious and appealing seafood dishes.
