Pothisomron Pagoda - An Ancient Khmer Architectural Masterpiece in Can Tho
Pothi Somron Pagoda has undergone two relocations: from O Mon Arch to Bo Rich, and finally to its current location by Rach Chua (Pagoda Canal). Within the pagoda grounds, many green trees, especially the Somron tree species, have contributed to the pagoda's name.
The main hall, a prominent building in the architectural complex, faces east, reflecting the Khmer belief that even though Buddha resides in the Western Pure Land, he always faces east to save sentient beings. The steps leading up to the main hall feature exquisite meditating Buddha statues, while the walls are adorned with vivid paintings depicting the life of Buddha. Images of Kinnari celestial dancers and Krud mythical birds are gracefully carved, supporting the tiled roof.
The main hall's roof has three overlapping tiers, with dragon figures running along the eaves, their tails soaring skyward. Every detail, from columns, fences, doorframes, and walls, is meticulously carved with geometric and water hyacinth patterns, highlighting the pagoda's artistic beauty.
