Bac Lieu Tourism's Strong Breakthrough: Affirming its Position as a New Tourist Hub in the Land of Nine Dragons
The Tet Giap Thin 2024 holiday period saw favorable weather conditions, leading to a significant increase in both domestic and international visitors coming to Bac Lieu for sightseeing and accommodation. This was particularly notable as the province boasts 11 out of 43 recognized typical tourist destinations by the Mekong Delta Tourism Association.

Bac Lieu is renowned for its cultural tourism products, notably those associated with the 'Dạ Cổ Hoài Lang' melody, the Southern Vietnamese Don Ca Tai Tu folk music, and attractions linked to the 'Prince of Bac Lieu' brand, as well as spiritual and cultural tourism. In 2023, Bac Lieu welcomed approximately 4.2 million visitors, generating a total revenue of about 3,850 billion VND, ranking 4th in the Mekong Delta region. The growth of tourism has significantly contributed to shifting the economic structure, attracting investment, creating jobs, and improving the livelihoods of local residents.
Ms. Tran Thi Lan Phuong, Director of Bac Lieu Province's Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, stated that 2024 is identified as a "crucial year" for implementing the 13th National Party Congress Resolution, the 16th Provincial Party Congress Resolution, and the province's 5-year socio-economic development plan (2021-2025). Accordingly, the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism is determined to accelerate the execution of tasks across all sectors, especially the objective and solutions to "strongly develop tourism, striving to make it a key economic sector of the province and one of the tourism centers of the Mekong Delta region."
Right from the beginning of 2024, the Provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism directed enhanced preparations for technical infrastructure and human resources in the tourism sector for the Tet Giap Thin holiday. They also inspected and controlled the quality of services at tourism businesses, especially accommodation establishments, tourist transport services, tourist attractions, restaurants serving tourists, shopping centers, and entertainment venues. Tourism activities and services throughout Bac Lieu province during the 2024 Lunar New Year were well-prepared, meeting the needs of both visitors and local residents celebrating Tet in a joyful, exciting, and safe atmosphere.
During the Tet Giap Thin days (from the 29th of the twelfth lunar month to the end of the 5th day of Tet), Bac Lieu welcomed approximately 245,000 tourist visits, an increase of 11.7% compared to 2023; of these, about 21,500 visitors used accommodation services. Total tourism service revenue reached approximately 125 billion VND (an 11.8% increase); with revenue from restaurants, hotels, and food service establishments accounting for about 62 billion VND.

Ms. Tran Thi Lan Phuong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, affirmed that building on the achievements, and to help Bac Lieu become one of the tourism centers of the Mekong Delta, the province will, in the coming time, intensify efforts to attract social resources for investing in the development of tourism infrastructure, technical facilities, and transport infrastructure in key areas that drive tourism growth.
Bac Lieu is stepping up its domestic and international tourism promotion through activities in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and other key domestic tourism markets, as well as in countries with a strong tendency to attract tourists to Mekong Delta provinces and cities. Notably, the province regularly hosts regional, national, and international cultural, sports, and tourism events, contributing to promoting the image and people of Bac Lieu to both domestic and international visitors, thereby attracting more tourists.
Mr. Pham Van Thieu, Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, observed that the province's tourism has continuously experienced strong development. Annually, the number of tourists has increased by an average of about 15%, and total tourism revenue has grown by approximately 20%. Tourism services are becoming increasingly rich and diverse, creating many branded tourism products within the region and nationwide, thereby promoting Bac Lieu's rapid and sustainable tourism development. This momentum encourages Bac Lieu to set higher expectations for the growth of its tourism sector. The province is focusing on researching and developing more forms of agricultural-rural tourism, eco-tourism, and community-based tourism, leveraging the cultural resonance and interplay of architecture, beliefs, and traditional festivals of the three ethnic communities – Kinh, Hoa, and Khmer – to diversify tourism products and attract more visitors to Bac Lieu for sightseeing and experiences.

Beyond its tourism potential and strengths, OCOP (One Commune One Product) products, which cater to visitors' shopping and gifting needs, are also a crucial factor driving tourism development. The entire province now boasts 131 OCOP products, including 33 products rated 4 stars and 98 products rated 3 stars. These products are increasingly diverse in design, meet quality and food safety standards, and better serve the demands and tastes of tourists. Along with the strategic focus on developing local specialties and traditional products, and promoting the cultural values of the locality, Bac Lieu's OCOP products are set to grow stronger, gain wider recognition, and bring more value to the province.
Mr. Pham Van Thieu, Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, further informed that the locality identifies tourism as one of the five pillars of socio-economic development, aiming to make the province one of the tourism centers of the Mekong Delta. Concurrently, there is a strong determination to develop Bac Lieu City into a National Tourist Area, a green, clean, beautiful, and civilized city.
The province aims to welcome over 7 million visitors by 2025, with total revenue exceeding 10,000 billion VND, contributing 7-9% to the province's GRDP, and creating jobs for 30,000 laborers. By 2030, Bac Lieu strives to have a sustainably developed tourism sector with a synchronized, modern, and professional technical infrastructure system; to be one of the leading tourism centers in the Mekong Delta region in terms of both scale and quality; welcoming 12 million visitors, achieving a total tourism revenue of 28 trillion VND, contributing 10.9% to the province's GRDP, and providing employment for 50,000 laborers.
